DNKL – Otherside
DNKL – Otherside (2015)
Directed by: Eric Ivar Persson
One of Sweden’s burgeoning new electronic acts, ‘noir-pop’ trio DNKL, follow up their acclaimed debut EP Wolfhour with new single ‘Otherside’ available now on Different Recordings. Now, the band has shared a cinematic video for the track via DUMMY. Along with Swedish filmmaker Eric Ivar Persson they have created a stunning visual exploration of love and friendship, all transmitted through a dark journey into rural Sweden. Marking the band’s first release for re-launched UK indie Different Recordings (Claptone, Shadow Child), ‘Otherside’ sees DNKL drift gradually away from the smoky, cinematic texture of their debut EP and transmit a more propulsive, enveloping soundscape.
“We started to work on ‘Otherside’ last summer, actually under quite some pressure,” explains the band. “We were set to perform at Roskilde and at the time of the booking, our first ever in fact, we only had one track out on Soundcloud. We simply had to sit down together and create music that was needed for the show. It turned out to be quite an exciting challenge.”
“It was the first time we had experimented with adding dance-ier elements to our music,” they add. “Lyrically though it’s still very DNKL though, it’s a song about vanity and the heart burning desire to always get a piece of what we don’t have. The constant gazing at the other side.”
As international praise continues to accumulate for their debut EP Wolfhour, DNKL’s potential and worldwide presence only grows. ‘Otherside’ is a testament to this, proving a remarkably assured return for a still relatively new band.
