Hein Cooper – The Real
Hein Cooper – The Real (2015)
Directed by: DAVAI
Hein Cooper explores simulation and alternate realities in new video for the Matrix-inspired track “The Real”.
Combining luscious vocals with pulsing synths, “The Real” is a somber, nostalgic number produced by Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, The Local Natives). The music video directed by DAVAI presumably follows the story of two men’s alternate realities. Will they embrace the red pill’s truth as their paths interlock?
“The Real was inspired by one of my favourite films The Matrix” says Cooper. “I loved the trilogy’s message and feel that it relates to our world now more than ever. The idea of whether we are living in reality or in a simulated world created to control us is essentially what drives the song. So in the bridge for instance, I wanted to make the listener feel like they had woken from the simulation and seen life as it actually is, and give the impact of hard truths by tripping and twisting the groove.”
A vision completely grasped by DAVAI who wholeheartedly accepted to direct the video. Immediately seduced by Hein Cooper’s creative openness, and inspiration for the song, it was a challenge they simply could not resist translating into film.
Hein Cooper is an Australian indie musician and songwriter from Milton, NSW. Discovered in a small bar in Sydney by Franz Schuller, who also discovered Half Moon Run, he was invited to write and demo his songs in Montreal, Canada, and signed to Indica Records.
Enlisting legendary producer Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, The Local Natives), Cooper’s blend of indie & pop, and emotive lyrics are all woven together with his delicately desperate vocals on his debut album set to be released in February 2016.
Meanwhile, the singer-songwriter has been on a tear in the last few months as he extensively toured in support of his first two singles The Art of Escape and The Real. Critically-acclaimed, he has been seducing fans at major festivals across Canada and Europe, including CMW (Canada), The Great Escape (UK), and Soundcity (UK) only to name a few. He has also opened for The Franklin Electric, Half Moon Run, Ash Grunswald, Kim Churchill, and will also support Sophie Hunger’s European tour this fall.
