Back on the Chain Gang is a song by The Pretenders, released as a single on September 17, 1982. Written by Chrissie Hynde, it became the band’s biggest hit in the United States, reaching number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was later included on their third album, *Learning to Crawl*, released in January 1984. The accompanying music video, directed by Don Letts, features Chrissie Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers, the only remaining original members at the time, performing amidst imagery of chain gangs and urban landscapes.
