The song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 1981 and earned Springfield a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The accompanying music video, directed by Rick Springfield himself, features the singer portraying the narrative of unrequited love, with actor Steve Antin playing the role of Jessie.
