DMCA / Copyright Policy

The short version
AltSounds respects copyright. We don’t host video files — we index and embed videos that are publicly available on YouTube — but if you hold rights in content indexed here and want it removed from our index, we have a formal process below, and a registered agent to receive your notice. We respond to valid notices promptly.
1. Our role: index and embed, not host
It’s important to understand how AltSounds works. We do not store or stream the actual video or audio files. Those are hosted by YouTube and played through its embedded player. What AltSounds provides is an organized index — metadata, curation, and embedded links — pointing to content that is already publicly available on those platforms.
This means there are two separate things a rights holder may want to address:
- Removing the underlying video — that file lives on YouTube, so a complete takedown of the media itself must be directed to YouTube.
- Removing the embed and metadata entry from our index — that’s what we can do, and what this policy covers.
2. This is separate from the “Report video” button
The “Report video” feature on the Service is for flagging broken or mismatched videos — a content-quality tool. It is not a copyright mechanism. Copyright complaints must come through the process in this policy so they reach our designated agent and are handled correctly.
3. Filing a copyright (DMCA) notice
If you believe content indexed or embedded on AltSounds infringes a copyright you own or are authorized to act for, send a written notice to our Designated Copyright Agent that includes all of the following (as required by 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):
- Your physical or electronic signature;
- Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed;
- Identification of the material on the Service you claim is infringing, with enough detail for us to locate it (e.g. the page URL or the specific video entry);
- Your contact information — name, address, telephone number, and email;
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
- A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on its behalf.

4. What happens next
On receiving a valid notice, we will act expeditiously to remove or disable access to the embed and metadata entry identified, and will make a reasonable effort to notify the affected party where applicable.
5. Counter-notice
If you believe your content was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to the agent above containing: your signature; identification of the removed material and its prior location; a statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief it was removed by mistake or misidentification; your name, address, and phone number; and a statement consenting to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district (or, if outside the US, the Southern District of New York), and that you will accept service of process from the complaining party. We may restore the material as permitted under the DMCA.
6. Repeat infringers
Consistent with the DMCA, we will, in appropriate circumstances, remove entries and restrict access for parties who are the subject of repeated valid infringement notices.
7. Misrepresentation
Please note that under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), anyone who knowingly materially misrepresents that material is infringing — or was removed by mistake — may be liable for damages. Make sure your notice is accurate before sending it.
